Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies: a requirement of the ASLM Fellowship
At Lifestyle Medicine 2016 we heard from Stephan Herzog (Executive Director, American Board of Lifestyle Medicine) & Dr Liana Lianov (Past President, American College of Lifestyle Medicine) regarding the recently developed Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies Program.
This program was developed by ACLM in collaboration with the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) and outlines the 15 core competencies of Lifestyle Medicine as identified in “Physician Competencies for Prescribing Lifestyle Medicine” (JAMA. 2010;304(2):202-203).
This evidence-based online course has been designed to provide a comprehensive foundation for primary health care professionals to learn the core key principles of Lifestyle Medicine. It is suitable for GPs, medical specialists, nurses, nurse practitioners and allied health professionals.
The Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies Program is a core requirement of the ASLM Fellowship. All candidates without tertiary qualifications specific to the field of Lifestyle Medicine will be required to complete this program as part of their candidature. This is to ensure that all ASLM Fellows have a broad foundation across most domains of Lifestyle Medicine, not just in particular areas of expertise, as well as to provide a common language of competency for understanding and collaboration among local and international Lifestyle Medicine peers.
The program consists of nine modules comprising a 30-hour program covering basic and advanced information on:
- Core Competencies of Lifestyle Medicine
- Nutrition
- Physical Activity
- Coaching Behavior Change
- Sleep Health
- Tobacco Cessation
- Alcohol Use Risk Reduction
- Emotional Wellness/Stress Reduction
- Electives (choose 3 hours from 5 options)
On completion, participants will be able to:
- Describe the fifteen core competencies of lifestyle medicine as identified in “Physician Competencies for Prescribing Lifestyle Medicine” (JAMA. 2010;304(2):202-203)
- Incorporate competencies into clinical practice
- Enhance efficacy in lifestyle assessments and evidence-based lifestyle prescriptions
- Leverage community and team-based resources to support lifestyle change
