With the overarching theme of ‘Planet Consumption’, primary care, public and planetary health certainly did converge in Manly for Lifestyle Medicine 2017.
About 480 people attended over the three days, exploring contemporary topics in Lifestyle Medicine by way of plenaries, concurrent streams, panels, workshops and in meaningful connection with like-minded professionals during the breaks.
If you weren’t able to attend or want to re-live the buzz, check out the spectacular highlights video (thanks to Stefan Markworth), review and photo gallery below.
Delegates were treated to healthy, largely plant-based meals, outdoor beachfront activities in the morning and, thanks to one of our three Masters of Ceremony, Dr Caroline West, hilarious song and dance routines to get them up, moving and engaged.
Standing ovations were once again the order of the day, with talks highlighting the interplay of environmental, behavioural and social determinants of health from Prof Tim Flannery, Prof Bob Morgan, Prof Felice Jacka, Dr David Katz, Dr Joanna McMillan, Dr Samantha Coulson, Prof Tim Usherwood, Prof Michael Moore and even a recorded message to the conference delegates from Helena Norberg-Hodge on living more sustainably.
Plenary sessions were brought to life as visual notes by Sketch Videos, concurrent sessions and workshops gave delegates a deeper dive into the themes and once again, the gala conference dinner impressed with music from the Michael St George band, a lively dance floor, and comedian Many Nolan – whose mission in life seems to be to leave no stone unturned!
For those of you who are as excited as we are to re-watch our favourite lectures and hear from the speakers we didn’t get a chance to see, lecture recordings are available on our website for those who attended, and also available for purchase for those who missed out.
Lifestyle Medicine 2018 will be held at the Sofitel Brisbane, 17-19 August, 2018. Join us for an exploration of personalised medicine, nutrigenomics, health technology, more on the microbiome, cardiovascular disease and dementia.
As we reflect on another year of innovation and advocacy, and on the energy and passion of all those who contributed to a wonderful weekend, we can’t help but share our favourite quote from Dr David Katz which serves as a reminder of how important Lifestyle Medicine is to overcoming the growing chronic disease burden:
“Lifestyle as medicine has the potential to prevent up to 80% of chronic disease; no other medicine can match that.”
