Culture Matters is an online course for health professionals designed to provide practical knowledge and skills in cultural awareness and competency.

The Culture Matters course is tailored to GPs and medical specialists, allied health professionals, researchers, educators, health executives and health service delivery personnel.

Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion for CPD purposes.

Dr Glen Davies was born in Wellington, New Zealand and trained at the Otago Medical School, 1984 to 1989. He worked as a house surgeon in Tauranga Hospital before he and his wife ventured to Papua New Guinea to work in a Mission Hospital for two years. During that time, he covered the state of emergency created by the Rabal volcanic eruption in 1994. Since then, he has spent time establishing himself in General Practice in Taupo, New Zealand and developed a passion for Lifestyle Medicine. Outside of his practice, he is a multisport and outdoor adventure enthusiast and a father to two children.

Chris is a medical practitioner, who has worked in many locations around rural and urban Australia, throughout a variety of clinical fields ranging from Indigenous health, addiction medicine and adolescent health. He has also obtained a Masters degree in Public Health, and is passionate about systems of health service provision, strengthening the integration between care providers and community grassroots. Having always been a lover of the outdoors, transcultural interactions, and a generally varied and diverse existence, he is naturally drawn to a more holistic and lifestyle-driven practice style. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and has worked within medical education both at graduate and postgraduate levels. He strives to promote health as a concept far beyond what doctors can discuss within a standard medical consultation!

Hine is a Nurse Practitioner in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Together with other women in her community, Hine worked to bring the Smear Your Mea campaign to wāhine Māori from the Taupō area, a campaign to offer cervical smears for wāhine Māori in a comfortable cultural environment – the marae.

Prof R.V (Bob) Morgan

Professor Morgan has a long and distinguished history of involvement and leadership in Aboriginal/Indigenous education and training in Australia and internationally.

Professor Morgan is a Gumilaroi man from the community of Walgett, north-west NSW. He is a highly respected and acknowledged Aboriginal educator/researcher who has worked extensively throughout Australia and internationally in the field of Aboriginal knowledge and learning for over thirty (30) years.

Professor Morgan has an indivisible commitment to the principles of Aboriginal self-determination and social and restorative justice.

Professor Morgan is particularly interested in and advocates the need for the design and development of culturally safe, contextual and affirming environments to better respond to the socio-economic and cultural needs and aspirations of Aboriginal peoples. His involvement and experience with Aboriginal education and training is shaped and influenced by his many years of senior leadership at the state, national and international levels of Aboriginal education policy and programming development.

Professor Morgan has served on various government commissions and boards and community-based organisations including the NSW Education Commission (1980-86), the NSW Anti-Discrimination Board, (1980-86), NSW Board of Adult Education, President, NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (NSWAECG- 1979-88) member National Aboriginal Education Committee (NAEC-1980-1988) Board, Royal Far West Home, and has hosted a number of Aboriginal Men’s healing and leadership gatherings/conferences.

Professor Morgan is Chair of the Board of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies and Research at the University of Newcastle and serves as a Visiting Professor with Minzu University in Beijing, China.

Professor Morgan was also elected as the inaugural Chair of the World Indigenous People’s Conference on Education (WIPCE) in 2014 and reelected in 2017.

Ella Ewens

Ella Ewens is a New Zealand registered optometrist working in the public sector in Auckland, New Zealand. She has 13 years experience working in clinical roles in the private and public system and in professional affairs for a medical devices company. She has worked in the United Kingdom, the United States and in New Zealand. Ella has a post-graduate diploma in Business and is studying a Masters in Public Health. She has a special interest in health equity, Māori health, population nutrition, obesity and the food environment.

Ella is a certified practitioner in lifestyle medicine, a member of Ora Taio, New Zealand Climate & Health Council and a member of the Public Health Association of New Zealand.
